Forsyth News and Special Events Forsyth has various special events and launches at its Manchester shop and other venues throughout the year. 2008 Due to unforeseen delays in gaining planning permission for our new updated shop front, the long awaited refurbishment of our historical Manchester premises has been put on hold until this year. Once we have the green light from the planners we anticipate the refurbishment will take about 8 months. We will keep this page up to date with news as it progresses. 2007 2007 was a busy and exciting year for Forsyths as we were celebrating our 150th anniversary.
We have been selected by the Guardian as a recommended independent retailer for musical merchandise - particularly our recorded music department.
Badly Drawn Boy and the Magic Numbers came to Forsyth to film as part of the 'Transmission' series on Channel 4. The show was broadcast on Friday 21st September 2007.
To help celebrate Forsyth's 150th anniversary Chetham's School of music hosted a concert performed by 12 very talented pupils on the new Schimmel K230T 7'6" grand piano. The concert, which was well attended by an invited audience including many past and present customers as well as the 'great and good' of the Manchester musical world.
Forsyth hosted a very well attended free workshop for piano teachers to discuss 'Teaching the 21st Century Piano Student'. Carol Matz led the workshop. Carol is a talented composer, arranger, and author of educational piano material. She has also been a private piano teacher for fifteen years teaching students of all ages within a wide range of abilities. Improvisation, composition, and music appreciation are all incorporated into Carol's teaching, along with an emphasis on artistic expression. There was a 20% discount off the Alfred piano teaching materials that form part of the workshop.
Forsyth will once again be offering discounts on music from the 2007 syllabus to competitors and teachers taking part in the Liverpool Performing Arts Festival. The syllabus is online here and our special online LPAF catalogue, with the reduced prices, can be accessed here (scroll to the bottom of the page). Forsyth will also be sponsoring the festival through the provision of top quality Schimmel pianos for use in competition classes. Past events
An exhibition of original artwork including contemporary paintings, photography and sculpture by a wide range of artists is being held at the Palace Hotel (Buckingham Suite) on Oxford Street. Forsyth worked together with Step Up to create an exciting North West arts festival (1-9 July 2006). Forsyth ran a competition for schools to design and paint a piano as well as gave taster piano lessons.
2005
Forsyth hosted a special demonstration of Korg PA series keyboards - in particular the fantastic PA1X and PA1X pro. Forsyth are proud to support the second Sing with the Hallé which will take place on Sunday 11th September 2005. All the sheet music and recordings of the repertoire are available at a special discounted rate... We will also be at the Bridgewater Hall on the day selling music etc.

Forsyth was proud to present, in association with Martin Guitars, an intimate performance with endorsee Diane Ponzio. Through extensive touring Diane has become renowned for her refreshing, diverse and unpredictable style of guitar playing. She plays acoustic folk music with overtones of jazz and strong haunting melodies. In recognition of her work as a clinician for Martin Guitars she was rewarded with her own Signature instrument, which she demonstrated at this Forsyth event. Many people came to the gig - several taking advantage of special offers on Martin guitars. Forsyth is a main stockist of the world renowned Martin Guitars.
Forsyth held a special evening of music with Hallé for customers and guests. The Hallé quartet, principal Clarinet and Pianist provided excellent chamber music while guests enjoyed meeting Hallé Music Director Mark Elder. It was a very successful evening which will be the first in a series of similar events.
A wide range of guitar enthusiasts came and enjoyed an evening trying an unrivalled selection of Martin Guitars. A special guest from Martin's UK representatives gave a demonstration as well as giving a fascinating insight into the history and design of Martin guitars.
2003
As part of a European wide initiative Manchester is helping to promote car free enjoyment of the centre of Manchester by holding an 'In Town Without My Car Day' on Deansgate. Deansgate will be closed to traffic from St Mary's Gate to Bridge Street with street entertainment and artisan market stalls.
Forsyth will be joining in the festivities by opening the shop between 11am and 5pm as well as providing live entertainment in the street, free helium balloons etc.
Forsyth is proud to have sponsored the first Manchester Last Night of the Proms. Held in Exchange Square it was a great success with over 2500 people joining in the festivities. There was 3 1/2 hours of live music follwed by a live link up with the BBC last night of the Proms in the Royal Albert Hall in London via the large TV screen.

Concert Pianist Bernard Roberts performed a piano recital on the new Schimmel Professional Series Concert Grand Piano to a packed audience as part of the Chetham's International Summer School. Richard Gilewitz gave two very successful performances and workshops in the Forsyth Instrument Department to appreciative audiences. He played a selection of the Tacoma guitar range including the Papoose (see second picture) - a small guitar tuned a fifth higher than standard pitch, designed by George Gruhn a renowned author and collector of guitars.
